June 2017, the pinnacle of an intense preparation period: after being shipped over land and water by Wagenborg from Almelo to Amsterdam, the steel trusses were installed. Sadly the installation of the first truss had to be delayed because of the stormy winds. A setback for both those involved and interested, including the residents of the Silodam. On June 9 the time had finally come and Wagenborg was able to install the first truss.
To install the trusses (with a length up to 48.5 metre and weighing up to 78 tonnes each), Wagenborg deployed two mobile telescopic cranes equipped with a jib, each with a lifting capacity of 500 tonnes. The Pontsteiger is situated on the river IJ, a beautiful but very cramped jobsite. Both cranes had to be positioned between the structure itself and the sheet piling. Not a problem for Wagenborg, but above all an interesting challenge.
In close cooperation with all parties involved, Wagenborg installed the trusses according to plan. In the end it all came down to craftsmanship and cooperation between the crane operators, seeing there was only a few millimetres leeway!
The lifting of the steel trusses for the Pontsteiger project was a masterpiece that has been awarded with the ESTA Award.
ESTA is the European Association of heavy transport, heavy lifting and crane rental companies. The ESTA represents the national associations in the heavy transport and lifting sector. Each year, ESTA Awards are awarded for extraordinary projects in the field of technical ingenuity, innovation or safety.
De Pontsteiger in Amsterdam is one of the largest and highest residential buildings in Amsterdam. An eyecatcher at the Amsterdam skyline, with a broad view on the IJ-river and the Houthaven area. Would you like to know more? Have a look at the website www.pontsteiger.nl.
