Bridge team installs record-breaking bridge in Estonia

The River Pärnu in Estonia flows through the city of Pärnu, also known as the 'Summer Capital of Estonia' because of its location on the Gulf of Riga and its many summer festivals. In the middle of this historic city, a new riverside link is being built. A perfect job for Wagenborg Nedlift's bridge team.

Longest bridge

The new steel arch bridge is a colossus, weighing 950 tonnes. And with a span of no less than 140 metres, it is by far the longest bridge in Estonia. For the transport operation, the bridge has been reinforced with additional structures, bringing its total weight to almost 1,200 tonnes. The access bridge, over which the transport to the river takes place, was also reinforced for the occasion.

Inventive solution

Together with the customer, Wagenborg Nedlift's engineers came up with an inventive transport and access operation for this record-breaking bridge, which took place in several phases:

  • The bridge is loaded onto two sets of SPMT trailers (68 axle lines) using trailer hydraulics.

  • Via the reinforced access bridge, the team manoeuvres the new arched bridge towards the abutment using the SPMTs.

  • One of the pontoons ready in the river, equipped with support structures and the box jacking system, takes over the front part of the bridge from the first set of SPMTs.

  • The rear set of SPMTs and the pontoon slowly manoeuvre the bridge across the river.

  • After the rear set of SPMTs reaches the abutment, the second pontoon takes over the front section of the bridge from the first pontoon.

  • The first pontoon moves to the rear of the bridge and takes over from the SPMTs.

  • Both pontoons are used to manoeuvre the bridge over its final position.

  • To lower the arch bridge onto its temporary foundations, the team uses the box jacking system.

Teamwork and technical ingenuity

After an intensive period of preparation, the bridge was finally installed in mid-August. Under the watchful eyes of the client and many of the city's residents, the bridge specialists completed the job exactly as planned. A fine result of the excellent teamwork and technical ingenuity of the Wagenborg team.

Almost finished?

Now that the new bridge is in place, the main contractor is working on the final foundations and access roads. The new river crossing is expected to be operational in June 2025.
