Huge project at Center Parcs Les Bois-Francs

How do you replace a complete dome roof of a subtropical swimming pool at a French holiday park within four weeks? With clever lifting solutions, tight and well thought-out planning and preparation, we realised the replacement of the dome roof in record time.

Major job at Center Parcs France

After a year and a half of preparation, this amazing job was completed with the regular team. The entire dome roof was replaced. Not only that, the work took place while at the same time the pools were being renewed and even 5,000 visitors were still walking around until the day the work started.

Challenges and solutions

This challenging lifting project consisted of several phases, each presenting challenges.

  • 856 old triple-insulated windows had to be lifted out. A large number of these were leaky and broken. They could not hang in a glass piston for more than about 1 minute because of the risk of the windows breaking.

  • The new trusses had to be angled and aligned just right with the ridge construction. The new plastic domes were built together in modules of different sizes and weights.

  • The park was designed for passenger cars and not for the heavy lifting and transport equipment needed for this project.

  • It was a challenge to complete the project in four weeks. We had two weeks for dismantling and two weeks for building the dome roof.

  • The simultaneous execution of the sometimes risky work on the dome roof and in the swimming pools below it presented plenty of safety challenges.

Development of special lifting frame

The new plastic domes were pre-assembled in 64 modules in the car park outside the park. From there, they were transported to under the crane hook. For hoisting, our engineers developed a special lifting frame, a practical hoisting tool equipped with different coloured lifting eyes that corresponded to the various types of modules. Above this, a balancer was deployed again for efficiently and safely setting the right lifting angle.
